Tell us about your business! After being a Marine Corps Wife for almost 10 years, we've moved and had our fair share of new homes. Decorating was difficult overseas in Okinawa, so in my spare time, I started working with wall decals. Before I knew it, I had a fully functioning business on Okinawa, serving the military wives, the local Japanese people, and even local and military businesses. After the tremendous growth, we moved to the United States, where the business began to grow even more. I work primarily from home on Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. I love helping military wives, and women in general, make their homes beautiful. Interior decorating is something that I have always loved, and being able to do it full time, while still being a traveling Marine Wife, has been a dream!
Why did you choose entrepreneurship? I chose entrepreneurship not just for myself, but for my family. It was the best option with a husband who was frequently gone training, deployed, or working long hours. While I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, I often found myself working long hours, and exhausted at the end of the day from teaching. After a few years, I began to lose my passion and love of teaching. While overseas, I started my business as a hobby, and I grew to love it so much that I decided to grow and expand so I could take this business with us back to the United States. It was the best decision I ever made for myself and my family. I'm there when my kids need me for school, sports, or doctor appointments, but I can still work full time from my home office and help other's make their homes beautiful. I have been blessed so much with this opportunity to learn and grow from others.
Why do military spouses make great entrepreneurs? I think we make good entrepreneurs for a number of reasons. Military spouses are always put to the test. Before being a military spouse, I never faced many of the challenges that I have. I had to learn how to be creative and find solutions to problems I never thought I'd face, and do them alone. Being creative is something I see in many military wives I've come into contact with, and I've been given opportunities to grow and learn from each one of them. We are even given the chance to learn from other cultures when we travel across the globe, and learn how other people live and work.
What is a "blocker" for you in business. What holds you back? My business coach, Renae, has always told me that nothing, not one thing, could ever hold me back from my dreams. I fully believe that after the success I've had. The only thing that could ever hold me back is the limits I put on myself. After surpassing every goal I had for this business, I now believe that anything I dream is within reach.
How has being a military spouse changed you for the better? Before I was a military spouse, I thought my life was going in one direction, down a path that most people take. I'd finish college, start my career, and then have a family someday. I had no goals, and no real passion for anything in general. Meeting my husband changed everything. I suddenly became a goal-oriented person! I was driven by goals, and I'd meet and surpass every one of them. My first goal was finishing my senior year of college. Even with a newborn, I finished it. Then I wanted to lose weight. I lost 100lbs in a year, and was even mentioned by Bob Harper of the Biggest Loser! I dropped so much weight that people back home didn't even recognize me. I became a running, weight lifting, Cross-fitting machine. I was loving life when we moved to Okinawa. I was a new person, stronger, healthier, but I didn't know where I was going with my career. After my hobby became a business, I started making more goals and surpassing them one by one by one.
Now, not only am I the healthiest I've ever been in my life, but I have a career that I can take with me wherever I go. It's helped me set an example for my kids that ANYthing is possible if they just believe it and work hard enough for it. Before becoming a military spouse, I never would have believed that was true. My life has changed completely. From being able to meet amazing military spouses, to experiencing other cultures, and being inspired daily by the Marines I see.
What strengths do you possess, that you did not know you had, until you became an entrepreneur? I learned that I have a knack for helping people form something they want into something beautiful for their walls. I learned how to take an idea and not just put it to paper, but make it even better! I help make a temporary house into a real, beautiful, inspiring home. It's my passion and my drive to help military spouses, and people across the country make their homes beautiful.
What would you tell a milspo entrepreneur who is feeling discouraged? Surround yourself with people who support you and your dream. I have an amazing family who supports me, and my husband has been my biggest supporter from day one. He's always been there to help guide me, listen, and give advice. I have a best friend who has been there night and day, every step of the way (even while I was overseas), who has been important to the success of my business. I also have an amazing group of people who are part of the Rich Mom University along with myself, and they along with our business coach Renae, have helped me every step of the way. They have been vital to my success, and it's great to have this wonderful group of people who understand what I'm going through. Support is extremely important, and I have so much of it! Never hesitate to ask for help, and remember that success doesn't happen overnight. Get a group of your own cheerleaders and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish!
What are your five favorite things that you can not live without as a milspo entrepreneur?
1. My Planner - I make a list of everything I have to do for the day, including emails, work orders, workout schedules, and even laundry!
2. Coffee - Enough said.
3. The Rich Mom University & My Business Coach - My network of support is vital to me.
4. My Smart Phone - I network with other businesses, email customers, and chat with fans on social media.
5. My Mail Carrier - Never, ever underestimate the value of a good working relationship with your mail carrier.
What is the most amazing thing you have experienced in your business thus far? Being featured recently in Yahoo Finance was absolutely amazing!
How do you want to be remembered? I don't want people to remember me personally. I want them to remember the beauty that my business brought to their home. I want them to remember the anticipation they felt when they put up a brand new decal for their newborn baby's room. I want them to remember the joy they felt putting up their personalized family tree after they were married. I want them to remember the excitement they felt when they put up our Christmas decor in their brand new home. It's not about me personally, it's about the customer and the feelings they have when they make their home beautiful and perfect.
